Prepping For Your Winter Sea Fishing Trip

At Brighton Lure Boat, there’s no doubt that we love sea fishing throughout every season. In our part of the world, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a new and unique angling experience with each change of season. As the weather changes and fish migrate, you’ll experience new conditions and have the opportunity to catch different species of fish.

We all have our favourite times of year to hit the open waters, but when it comes to prepping for your winter sea fishing trip, you’ll need to consider what to wear to keep you safe and comfortable during the colder months. Choosing the right clothes to wear on each winter day is key to ensuring that your trip doesn’t get ruined by wet clothes or chattering teeth!

We are here to offer our best advice on what to wear for a sea fishing trip this winter.

Wrap up warm

Remember, it may already feel cold as you head outside, but temperatures at sea are lower than they are on shore. Even if the weather seems pretty good, we always recommend that you layer up with plenty of warm clothing. We suggest that you wear a good thermal base layer for winter sea fishing, as this will help to preserve your body. Don’t forget to also wear thick socks and undergarments.

If at any point during your fishing experience, you feel a little too warm, you can always remove a layer, and if you start to feel cold again, you can put that layer back on.

Wear a hat and gloves

Because we lose so much heat from the head, it is important to bring along some thermal headwear for your wintry fishing adventure. A good pair of gloves is essential too, helping to keep your fingers protected, and ensuring you keep a strong grip on your fishing rod.

Always bring waterproofs

Remember, ours is an open boat, so even in the winter, you’ll be exposed to the elements. Waterproof coats and waterproof trousers are key to keeping dry – a combination of rainwater and ocean spray can make it pretty wet on deck.

Wear suitable footwear

As mentioned above, it can get wet on deck, so a good pair of boots or wellingtons with plenty of grip is recommended for any sea trip, but especially so during the winter. Whilst trainers are comfortable, they can become waterlogged quite quickly, so we recommend boots to keep you comfortable and steady on your feet during your fishing trip.
